I came across Kang while browsing the local Tower Records. They'd pulled out his new (and only solo) album and put it on display as a "local boy" (Seattle area) who's made it big.
Kang is an experimentalist in the same vein as Elliot Sharp (with whom Regina Carter has played and recorded), and his album was released on the same label: Tzadik. As I understand it, that label was founded by John Zorn, so you can see where the link in style is grounded. Although some of the style ideas (or just plain old violin abuse) can also be found in the work of Jon Rose as well, but for the most part Kang is well off into his own space.
