Kronos picThe top of the heap in modern-classical quartets, Kronos is as avant-garde as it gets. From Jimi Hendrix to Schnittke, they play it all, with an emphasis on modern atonal classical music. Tight ensemble, fantastic expression, and a repetoire that at times challenges even the more refined ear. You MUST see these folks live. It's incredible.

Depending on your taste, I can recommend a number of albums. "White Man Sleeps" is my all time favorite, with several simply brilliant tracks. I'm also very partial to their Gorecki album, but then I'm also a big time Gorecki/Arvo Part fan. If you want something really accessible, get "Pieces of Africa," which doesn't venture into the polytonal/atonal realms, and feeds on traditional African melodies and timbres. If you want something indicative of their more atonal work, get "Winter Was Hard" or "Short Stories." Definitely some more challenging stuff there. The first album has some Hendrix on it, and the two times I've seen them live they've played Hendrix for their encores. I wish they'd do an entire album of rock covers...

Here's a clip from one of my favorite pieces by Ornette Coleman (arranged by Mel Graves), off the "White Man Sleeps" album:
